I'm curious to how people are protecting their computer

I just have the basics, i use Avira, the free version http://www.avira.com/en/pages/index.php

I don't do anything else - Avira automatically updates and I run a complete scan every week, but it hasn't found anything, ever.

I surf, play WoW and some games via Steam, but that's pretty much it.

I'm on Win7, I use Firefox mostly, once in a while I use Chrome.
I back everything up via Carbonite.

what are you all doing?

I just use MS's free Security Essentials thinger. Seems to do the job will without getting in the way of anything.

Firefox w/ Adblock Plus (free)

ESET NOD32 Antivirus (not free)

Advanced SystemCare (free)

Windows XP (always updated)

Other then that, I just play it smart and safe when surfing the internet and avoid risky sites (like hack or warez sites, porn sites, gold seller sites, etc). When downloading stuff, I do so from a website with a good reputation when possible and scan all downloads before opening them.

It's been years since I had something show up on my computer and I can't remember what, if anything I had running at the time to protect it.

I just use Spy Sweeper and Adblock Plus with Firefox. I know better than to install bad things, so I don't worry about Virus protection.

Kaspersky and addaware on the infrequent clean up.

Kaspersky is meh but better than mcafee and no where near as bloated as norton.
