I absolutely love this movie, and yet, every time I bring it up, nobody else has ever seen it. Or even heard of it!
It's called "The Wizard of Speed and Time", and was originally a short movie made by a guy named Mike Jittlov back in 1979. You can watch it here;

There's a lot of pre-computer film trickery and special effects at work here, and it was pretty much all done by one guy. The video is a little rough (pulled from a VHS tape over three decades old, undoubtedly) but it's still pretty entertaining. It was shown at science fiction conventions a lot in the early 80's and gained popularity and momentum. Enough, eventually, to give Mike the chance at making a semi-fictionalized account of how the short film was made.
From Wikipedia;
"The feature film was filmed in 1983, released to theaters in 1989 (though it was never widely distributed), and was later released on VHS and laserdisc."
Here is the trailer for the movie!

The movie is part autobiography, part comedy and part depiction of the heavily-unionized Hollywood of the time. It's not too long and it looks like you can watch the entirety of it on Youtube, starting from here;

TWoSaT has never been released on DVD, which is a crying shame.
